Best Valentines Movies no. 1: The Object Of My Affection

Paul Rudd is known more today as Marvel’s Ant-Man. Meanwhile, Jennifer Aniston is recognized as one of the It ladies of Hollywood. But it will probably surprise you to know that they made a romantic movie together. And it’s a great one to start your Valentines movie marathon.

In the movie,Aniston plays Nina, a young social worker. She meets George (Rudd), a gay elementary school teacher at a party and the two soon become best of friends. However, their close relationship encounters an unexpected twist when Nina starts falling for George.

Why You Should Watch It

The Object Of My Affection is one lighthearted movie you will be laughing at with your beau. Rudd and Aniston showcase their flair for comedy in their various encounters, with the latter taking some fun cues from her stint as Rachel in Friends. And the humor itself is more on the subtle side, which you and your love will like.

And despite the lighthearted feel, the movie does a great job of exploring the theme of unrequited love. Nina has to come to terms with George loving her more as a friend. The film also celebrates different forms of love, with George finding a man that loves him back. A stellar cast of supporting characters adds to the film’s charm and makes you more drawn to the story.

Best Valentines Movies No. 2: The Beauty Inside

If your special someone is into KPop, you would want to add at least one Korean Valentines movie to your list. And while there are countless titles for you to choose from, this 2015 film is something that you will find fascinating.

The movie follows Woo-jin (Yoo Yeon-Seok), a man with a strange condition. Every day, he wakes up to find out that he is in a completely new body. Sometimes, he finds himself in the body of a woman, or even of different nationalities.

Trying to keep his life as normal as possible, Woo-jin soon develops a crush on furniture retailer Yi-soo (Han Hyo-Joo). Now, he finds himself in a dilemma/ How would he face Yi-soo if he keeps changing into a different person every time?

Why You Should Watch It

The premise alone is surely enough to draw your interest. Indeed, much of the film’s first part chronicles how Woo-jin gradually tries to get closer to Yi-soo as a different person every time. And you and your love will be chuckling at all the awkwardness of the different situations.

But the film really opens up once Woo-jin wins Yi-soo’s heart. The couple soon faces a lot of challenges resulting from Woo-jin’s shapeshifting. The film effectively handles the psychological aspect of the premise. And both Yoo Yeon-Seok and Ha Hyo-Joo effectively captivate the audience as they present their characters’ struggle for a happy ever after.

Best Valentines Movies no. 3: Love You To The Stars And Back

Nowadays, Antoinette Jadaone is one of the go-to directors for Pinoy romantic movies. And for a good reason, as she pens some of the most endearing stories for Valentines. Love You To The Stars And Back is one such gem that you and your partner would surely want to cuddle to while watching.

The movie follows Mika (Julia Barretto) as she goes on a road trip to discover aliens. Along the way, she accidentally bumps into good-natured Caloy (Joshua Garcia), who is on a journey of his own. Because she caused Caloy’s injury, Mika offers to give him a ride to his destination. And so they embark on a journey where they will discover love among other things.

Why You Should Watch It

Much like Jadaone’s other films, this one explores more than just romance. As the story unfolds, it turns into a story about loss, grief, and pain. The director peppers the story with little conversations that give a lot more insights into the characters’ thoughts and emotions. And the film earnestly believes in the premise it presents that you will also be caught believing.

Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia play their characters well. While you might not be a fan of loveteams, theirs is one of the rare ones that can draw you more to the characters they portray. This adds to the movie’s charm and is sure to get you and your love swooning like teenagers again.

Best Valentines Movies no. 4: Populaire

French is considered as the language of romance, with its swooning phrases. So, you would likely want to add at least one title to your playlist. And this 2012 romantic comedy is one film that will be a great choice.

The movie follows Rose (Deborah Francois), a secretary working for insurance agency owner Louis Echard. Louis notices that Rose has a natural knack for speed typing but can only do so with two fingers. Determined to make her the fastest typist around, he soon encourages Rose to join a speed typing contest. Echard also becomes her trainer for the said competition. During their time together, his feelings for Rose grow.

Why You Should Watch It

Though the movie’s premise isn’t your usual romantic fare, it works well with its theme of love blossoming even in mundane circumstances. Populaire is also a love letter to the classic romantic comedies of the past. In particular, it takes a lot of cues from the tandem of Doris Day and Rock Hudson. Those cues show up prominently in the movie’s 1950s setting.

Despite the throwback vibe, Populaire has a decisively modern outlook when it comes to romantic relationships. Rose is shown as a strong-willed woman who wants to be treated as an equal. On the other hand, Louis strays away from the typical leading men of the era and is a more relatable character. The humor will also draw you into the couple’s story further.
